Haunted Palouse, a fundraiser held since 2001, is off the calendar this year in the Whitman County community of Palouse, which has about 1,000 residents. The event typically used the town’s streets and buildings during the last two October weekends, with vendors, haunted attractions and live music. It was also canceled in 2023.

The immediate issue was a shortage of volunteer leaders. Casimiro Burns, who has helped organize the event since 2022, said planning meetings drew only him, his wife and a prospective leader for the 2027 event. In recent years, attendance had remained steady. Burns also runs Palouse Paintballers, which created “the lane” on two blocks of Shady Lane, where visitors could fire glowing jelly paintballs at targets and performers.

The event generated nearly $32,000 last year, with attractions generally charging $30. Its proceeds supported several local groups, including Garfield Palouse FFA, competitive robotics teams, the town art council and a Scouting America troop. The city received $2,500 for its swimming pool, while the community center also benefited. Burns hopes planning for next year starts earlier and may consider leading again, with city council help on insurance and other logistics.
